Useful Information When is the best time to go?
It is warm and sunny all year round with temperatures ranging from 77-90F, however the driest months are usually between late December and April. When rain falls, it can be a sudden torrential burst of 10-15 minutes or so.
Flight Times
The Maldives are 10.5 hours away by direct flight from London.
Time Difference
The Maldives are 5 hours ahead of the UK.
Do I need to take anti-Malaria tablets?
No.
Currency
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, although the US Dollar is widely accepted. There are no ATMs in the Maldives, although resort hotels will change your money into the Rufiyaa. However, don't change too much as it cannot be changed outside the Maldives. Any bills charged to your room can be settled by credit card.
Passports and Visas
You do not need to organise a visa in advance because your passport will be stamped with a free 30-day visa on arrival. Please remember that you need at least 6 months remaining on your passport from the date of return. If you need a new passport, do not leave it too late - I have had reports of some of our customers facing delays for their passport renewals to be processed and returned - stress! The Post Office will check your application form for you for a fee of about £6, however make sure your face in the photograph is the correct size - from personal experience it is better to get it done via a photographer than an automatic booth.
Cameras and Film
Most islands sell film although I always find good bargains at the airport. Remember to put all your film in hand luggage and not in checked baggage. This is because X-ray machines are now stronger and may fog film. Why not think about buying an underwater camera for when you go snorkeling or diving? Due to the clarity of the waters and clear blue skies, your pictures will be memorable.
Don't Forget...   to look up at the night sky! Due to the geographical location on the equator, and because there are no large towns nearby, the stars will look far brighter and more brilliant than you may notice at home. |
