Kuramathi Island


Our Opinion

Kuramathi is the only island in the Maldives where there is more than one hotel, with Cottage & Spa being the quieter, more romantic side with a selection of beach bungalows, water bungalows and two fantastic suites.

There are many little coves along the beach where you can sit by a palm tree during the day. Or, you could relax by the pool or head up to the top of the island where there is a beautiful sand bank - this is a great place to watch the sunset. In fact, you are free to wander thoughout the whole island no matter where you are staying.

The star accommodation at Kuramathi Cottage & Spa are the water bungalows - in fact they are probably the best value water bungalows in the Maldives. Sit out on the large decking and you can see the fish and the reef directly below you. The snorkelling here is superb. Steps lead directly into the water from your water bungalow, and there is a shower for when you come back up. This is a truly unique style of accommodation at very reasonable prices, and we have had superb feedback on these rooms.

One final thing to note is that the standard board basis is bed and breakfast which gives you complete flexibility over where you eat - whether it is the inexpensive main restaurant or one of the more romantic beach side restaurants. There are optional upgrades to Half Board or Full Board, but unfortunately not all-inclusive when staying on this part of the island. Having said this, food and drink prices are very reasonable.

You should definitely try out the small and intimate grill at the top of the island which is located by the beach - the food is fresh and delicious! Another excellent choice is the BBQ restaurant down at the Kuramathi Village part of the island - again we found the food and atmosphere to be superb!

A seaplane transfer is £44 return, and gives fantastic views over the islands and atolls. Many of our customers choose the one way option - travel to Kuramathi by seaplane and back by boat for just £22!



Rooms

The beach bungalows are of a very high standard with 4-poster bed, piped music, balcony, and an open air shower. They are well spaced out, and nicely decorated inside with terracotta and wooden furnishings.

UPGRADE: The Water Bungalows have a large balcony built over the sea where you can sit and watch the marine life below. Steps lead directly into the water. Like the beach bungalows, these are attractively decorated inside with large windows looking out to sea.


UPGRADE: The suites have a stunning open air bathroom, and a pathway in the private garden leading to a double jacuzzi with a thatched roof overhead! The suites are large, and have a separate living area plus a separate bath and shower.

Trips and Excursions

  • Visit a Local Island This is a great chance to visit a typical Maldive island to see what Maldivian life is like. It's a ten minute journey by boat to the neighboring island of Rasdhu, where you spend two-hours going around the island, and if you are interested in shopping there are several souvenir shops where you can buy printed T-shirts and sarongs.
  • Island Hopping On this full-day excursion you will have the opportunity to see three different islands and enjoy a BBQ lunch and great snorkelling. First stop will be a local island about one hour boat ride from Kuramathi. This island is home to a Maldivian fishing and farming community. You will have the chance to stroll the island and meet some Maldivians. Next stop will be a resort island where you can relax, swim or go snorkelling you might see some new fish, which you haven't seen in Kuramathi. Last stop will be an uninhabited island where you will be served a BBQ lunch, which is cooked over an open fire. Afterwards, Afterwards you can do snorkelling or you may even explore this small island and be Robinson Crusoe on your own desert island.
  • Snorkeling Safari Enjoy a couples of hours snorkeling over some of the best coral reefs in the area. Where you will get the chance to see some amazing fishes and colourful corals. On this trip you can visit three different reefs and you may compare how different these three reefs are.
  • Big Game Fishing If you've always wanted to try your luck at catching some really big fish, here's your chance. A specially adapted boat for big game fishing can take up to five people, the cost of the trip being divided among the people on board. There are three options to choose from: the morning session between 5.00-10.00 am, the afternoon session between 2.00-6.00 pm, or if you're really smitten with the idea, you can go for the full day's fishing lasting between 5.00 am-5.00 pm. Be ready for an exciting time. You could catch anything from wahoo, marlin, sailfish, barracuda or tuna.
